Security or Freedom in the Shade of Terror |
“Crimes of the most horrific sort are being committed at a global level” António Vitorino, EU Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs The EU wants to know young people’s views on how to create a balanced, well-thought-out approach in the fight against terrorism.
For example: How can we balance our need for security with our need for freedom? How much control and knowledge should we allow the state to have over our lives, and those of others, in the interests of our safety? Is there a place for a violent response? How do we strike a balance between taking reasonable precautions and having our lives ruled by fear and suspicion? How can we reduce those factors in foreign countries which might contribute to the emergence of a terrorism ‘breeding ground’? How can we prevent violent radicalisation from taking root in young people in Europe? (From EU Commission web press release) |
